Last month, we asked you, the audience, to help us pick the “Best of the Guests” for 2011. 2011 for the Dennis Daniel Show saw many unique characters, high flying superstars, and Dennis in several unpredictable moments with some of animé’s biggest stars. We are happy to announce that in a very close race, the Best of the Guests for 2011 is…REBECCA FORSTADT!

Rebecca Forstadt, who was on the January 14th edition of “The Dennis Daniel Show”, is best known as the voice of Lynn Minmay from the classic Robotech series. She’s also known as Suiseiseki from “Rozen Maiden”, Rika from “When They Cry”, and Ms. Giggles in “The Mr. Men Show!” Rebecca brought over three decades of performance and experience to her interview in January, and we are proud to announce her as “Best of the Guests!”

Of course, this was a VERY close race, so we must also acknowledge the second and third runners up. Coming in second is none other than Veronica Taylor, best known as Ash Ketchum from the original Pokémon, and in third, none other than Karen Strassman, the voice of Kallen Stadtfeld from “Code Geass”, and Soi Fong and Momo from “Bleach”

Congratulations to ALL three girls for being the very best of 2011 for the Dennis Daniel Show. We also would like to congratulate Jolene Luna, who is the winner of our “Best of the Guests” contest and will receive Season One, Part One of “One Piece” on DVD.

Another Anime Company Bites the Dust – Bye Bandai

Leave it to Facebook to get info on the state of the anime industry. Apparently Bandai is throwing in the towel on it’s anime products.

My friend and colleague Voice Actor Steve Blum wrote in Facebook:

I’m going to address this once and move on. Sad that I even need to. Piracy does affect the business – in all areas of entertainment. Those of you who so vehemently dispute this fact are obviously breaking federal law and intending to continue this trend with no regard for the damage you cause real people – some who have sacrificed everything to produce the products you steal. I wish you the best of luck building a career based on entitlement. Please allow us to pay our respects to a company that was one of the primary building blocks for the anime industry in America. Thank you, Bandai, for one helluva ride. Bang.

Bandai Entertainment Shutters Its Anime Operation, Scraps New Titles

Bandai Entertainment has announced that it will no longer publish new manga, DVD, or Blu-ray titles as of February 2012. The company will be restructuring, taking its dedicated staff down from five to three, and will entirely change focus. Instead of new releases, the Bandai Entertainment will shift over solely to merchandising, broadcast licensing, and digital distribution.

The move is not too surprising considering that the company closed its online store in late December. Though they company will continue to distribute its existing titles, it’s unclear whether or not it will keep those existing titles in print. Given the company’s new focus, it doesn’t seem likely.

That said, this could be a smart move for the company.Platform Nation points out that Bandai Entertainment has struggled in the face of competition from Viz publications and FUNimation. These moves would place Bandai Entertainment in a position where they could still make money — arguably much more money than before — without the overhead involved with producing a physical product. Though perhaps that is looking for a silver lining in the midst of a shutdown.

Star Driver Part 2 will be released on 1/17/12 on DVD ($39.98) and Blu-Ray ($49.98). Running time 300 minutes, with English subtitles

Tales of the Abyss Part 2 will be released on 1/3/12 for $29.98 ($34.98 for the limited edition with volume 2 of Tales of the Abyss: Asch the blood). Running time 175 minutes, with with English subtitles

The Girl Who Leapt Through Space Volume 4 will be released on 1/17/12 for $29.98. Running time 150 minutes, with English subtitles

February 2012

The following titles are all currently solicited for 2/7/12:

Had Fun at PMX Meeting The Ladies of Tenchi Muyo

This was my first time at PMX and even though I was only there for a few hours on Sunday, November 13, 2011 at the Hilton LAX. I had a blast. I got to meet a couple of ladies I had never met before. Plus Christina Vee showed up in an adorable anime outfit and was the first to ask us our panel a question.

The panel included Petrea Burchard who played Ryoko in the Series, Sherry Lynn who played Sasami and Tsunami, Ellen Gerstal, the original Mihoshi and me, who also played Mihoshi. I had never met Petrea or Ellen but have worked with Sherry many times. Here we all are below at our autograph session. We had a full house at our panel and a long line for autographs.

It’s always weird when you replace a voice, not to mention awkward, but, hey it happens. I’ve had my voice replaced as well. I had done a version of Rorouni Kenshin as Kaouru (Cory) (called Samurai X) and was replaced in the Bang Zoom version by Dorothy Fahn. I ended up playing another role on the newer version and wrote scripts for both.

I am sorry I missed the Roast of Richard Epcar which took place on Friday night. I heard it was pretty funny with roasters including Michael Sorich (always a crazy hoot) Steve Kramer, Mike Reynolds, Ellyn Stern, Mike McConnahie and Paul St. Peter.

While I was there I saw Stephanie Sheh working her We Heart Japan table and she told me she got a nice amount of donations. To donate to the cause please go to http://www.weheartjapan.com/

Our panel was asked the usual questions that we couldn’t answer such as

“Can you do a line from the series in your character voice?”

We cold read our lines from a script so unless we are like Marilu Henner, once it leaves our lips our brains zap the memory into oblivion.

A couple of us were very grateful for the Chinese Food and wine served in the green room. I hear I will be receiving a video of our panel. If I get it I will make sure to post it.
